5 Million Dollars, 1 Terabyte: Illegal Downloads Become Art

A new sculpture draws attention to the value that we place on digital content and its transient nature.

A glossy black external hard drive with 1 TB of stolen software worth up to $5 million is being displayed as art. The sculpture, on offer at Art 404 Gallery’s exhibition space is simply called 5 Million Dollars, 1 Terabyte. Some of the pirated downloads include Adobe software, Nintendo DS games, music albums and books. Lots of books for that matter, with fiction books alone totaling up to $3 million. You can view the full list of the illegally downloaded files in this PDF. The artwork analyzes not only our relationship to digital content, but questions what the value of these files is and how it is created.

The 5 Million Dollars, 1 Terabyte sculpture is accompanied by the ‘Google Search for Meaning’ exhibit. Both exhibits want us to question what technology really means in our lives and we interact with them.
