Jackson Hole Travel and Tourism Board is asking visitors to stop geotagging photos

2018-12-07 22:38:23

In Wyoming, United States, the Jackson Hole Travel and Tourism Board has launched a campaign imploring visitors to stop the use of geolocation tags when sharing photos of their outdoor adventures online.

As Vox recently pointed out in a video titled What happens when nature goes viral, geotagged photos have become a major issue for landmarks around the world. When photos posted to Instagram, Facebook, and other social networks are geotagged, knowingly or otherwise, it makes it easier than ever for new people to seek out the exact same location and have their own turn at taking a photo, only adding to the problem.

While it might not seem like a problem, the influx of visitors to many of these locations has caused a dramatic change in the environment, physically and otherwise. In Vox's example, Horseshoe Bend outside of Page, Arizona, United States, has seen an increase in visitors it isn't capable of sustaining — at least not without dramatic physical changes to improve the safety of the growing number of spectators.

It's this same issue the Jackson Hole Travel and Tourism Board is trying to address with its new campaign. 'Every time someone captures stunning scenery and tags the exact location, crowds follow,' says the narrator in the above video. 'The traffic causes unintended harm to pristine environments, plants, and animal habitats.'

To protect and preserve the two National Parks near Jackson Hole, the video implores visitors to use the new, vague location titled 'Tag Responsibly, Keep Jackson Hole Wild.' In addition to tagging the more general location, the Jackson Hole Travel and Tourism Board has also created a series of posters advising against using specific location tags.

Sometimes users are completely unaware that their images are being tagged. Most phones nowadays feature automatic geotagging and although a number of image hosting sites and social networks strip the metadata, there are others that use it by default. If you feel called to be a part of the campaign, be sure to check whether or not the information is being automatically uploaded — and if it is, remember to use more general location tags when traveling around.

A glowing river of books creates a traffic-free haven in Ann Arbor

2018-12-06 23:50:20
In their latest installment of Literature vs Traffic, Spanish design collective luzinterruptus transformed a major street in Ann Arbor, Michigan, into a glowing river of 11,000 books. Carried out to bring attention to the importance of pedestrian-friendly spaces, the large-scale installation turned an area typically marred by the sounds and pollution of cars into a quiet haven. At the end of the night, all the books were quickly “recycled” and taken home by visitors as a keepsake of the temporary... Взято отсюда

Первый выпуск программы "Десять лет которые потрясли нас"

2018-12-06 22:39:43

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FYYKx6V6u8s

Best Buy’s got a 10TB USB 3 external drive for $179.99

2018-12-06 16:38:05

Best Buy has a doorbuster currently listed at $179.99 (a $120 savings,) the Western Digital Easystore 10TB USB 3.0 external hard drive comes with a 32GB flash drive as well.

I’m just going to publish this as the deal is flippin’ sweet and you should probably go ahead and buy it in store, or online while supplies last / today only / not really sure how their doorbusters work.

$180 for 10TB works out to $18 a TB or $0.017 a GB. My first hard drive was $279 and was 40 mb ($7,142 per gig,) would have set me back about $73 million if I did the math right…

Note, buying online via our link might add to my $1.16 commission I have from them so far, so if you don’t want us making money just go and search it yourself.

Canada arrests Huawei CFO for violating Iran sanctions (updated)

2018-12-06 04:04:43

Huawei's ongoing US troubles just got much worse. Canadian law enforcement has confirmed to the Globe and Mail that it arrested Huawei CFO Wanzhou Meng at the request of the US over claims she violated sanctions against Iran. Most details are under wraps due to a publication ban at Meng's request, but she was arrested on December 1st in Vancouver and will have a bail hearing on December 7th.

We've asked Huawei for comment.

Meng isn't a stranger to issues with sanctions. In 2013, Reuters found that Meng served on the board of Skycom Tech, a company that offered to sell HP equipment to Iran in late 2010 with Huawei's apparent blessing -- 13 pages of the proposal were marked as "Huawei confidential." The deal reportedly never went through, but it could have landed at least Huawei and Skycom in trouble. It's unclear if the arrest has a connection to the 2010 sale or is based solely on separate allegations.

Either way, the bust could easily raise tensions between the US and Huawei, if not China at large. American officials have not only banned Huawei devices in government, they've pressured other countries to drop the use of Huawei equipment, with at least some success. Now, the US has arrested one of the highest-ranking executives in the company -- that's a serious blow regardless of the merits of the case, and it's doubtful either Huawei or the Chinese government will have kind words in response.

Update 12/5/18 9:38PM ET: Huawei has provided the following statement to Engadget:

Recently, our corporate CFO, Ms. Meng Wanzhou, was provisionally detained by the Canadian Authorities on behalf of the United States of America, which seeks the extradition of Ms. Meng Wanzhou to face unspecified charges in the Eastern District of New York, when she was transferring flights in Canada.

The company has been provided very little information regarding the charges and is not aware of any wrongdoing by Ms. Meng. The company believes the Canadian and US legal systems will ultimately reach a just conclusion.

Huawei complies with all applicable laws and regulations where it operates, including applicable export control and sanction laws and regulations of the UN, US and EU.

Samsung caught using another DSLR photo to sell a phone camera

2018-12-04 23:24:35

No, manufacturers still haven't stopped using DSLR photos to fake phone camera shots. Photographer Dunja Djudjic has discovered that Samsung Malaysia bought one of her DSLR self-portraits through Getty and used a heavily edited version of it to advertise the portrait mode on the Galaxy A8 Star. The image use is thankfully legal, but Samsung's marketing implies this is a real photo from the phone -- and it doesn't even reflect the original photo.

The kicker? This not only isn't the first deceptive use of DSLR photos this year, this isn't the first from Samsung this year. In addition to the Huawei incident, Samsung Brazil was caught passing off two stock photos as Galaxy A8 selfies, going so far as to add watermarks implying that it owned the pictures.

We've asked Samsung for comment.

While the company isn't the only notable offender, it highlights a mounting problem for shoppers. Now that many phones include portrait modes, the gap between their pictures and those from a DSLR have narrowed considerably. That gap still exists, though, and customers might not realize that a phone (especially a mid-tier model like the A8 Star) can't perform as well as Samsung claims. Ideally, phone makers would always use samples from the device itself and eliminate any doubt.
