According to a report published by Anodot, 49% of survey respondents find it difficult to get cloud costs under control. Furthermore, 54% believe their primary source of cloud waste is a lack of visibility and observability into basic cloud usage. Nothing new here.
What did catch my eye is that 49% said that managing complex multicloud environments was a core challenge to managing cloud costs. One in two enterprises is finally understanding that cloud architectural complexity is a core part of cloud cost utilization and needs to be dealt with.
I’ve certainly been waving the flag of “multicloud complexity is an issue” for many years here. The latency in enterprise IT responding to this challenge is likely because the pain had not yet been felt. I’ve noticed throughout the years that it’s one thing to sound an alarm and another for enterprise IT to finally heed the warning. Now it’s hitting business in the budget, which is something that will quickly get you fired.

That’s because HIPAA has many, many gaps and doesn’t actually keep information around abortion safe in many situations.
Here’s something HIPAA does do, though — govern garbage! It’s a HIPAA violation for someone to do what the New England Dermatology and Laser Center (NEDLC) did last year: throw away containers with patient labels on them in a parking lot dumpster. The labels had patient names and birthdays on them, and a security guard found them. The Department of Health and Human Services did an investigation, and NEDLC settled for $300,640.
There are very specific rules around how healthcare providers and insurance companies can dispose of identifiable health information about their patients. They can’t just put pill bottles or patient records in dumpsters, where anyone might be able to come across them. Healthcare providers should be “shredding, burning, pulping, or pulverizing” paper patient health records, the agency says in an FAQ. If they’re trying to get rid of digital health records stored on hard drives, they should be destroying them by “disintegration, pulverization, melting, incinerating, or shredding.” Sometimes, they might be able to put prescription bottles or hospital ID bracelets in locked dumpsters.
Instead of doing any of that, the NEDLC would just put containers with patient labels in the regular garbage.
After the HHS investigation, NEDLC agreed to create and implement a new policy for how it’ll dispose of health information. It’ll train employees and penalize any employees who don’t follow the new plans.
This is the sort of thing HIPAA is built to do. It makes sure someone doesn’t have a container showing that they had a dermatological test left in a parking lot. It makes sure that doctors don’t leave nasty Google reviews about patients and that hospitals are protecting against cyberattacks that could reveal patient information. It doesn’t make sure that cops can’t access your medical records, and it doesn’t stop period tracking apps from sharing data with Facebook or Google. HIPAA can be useful, but it was built for garbage — not for the digital surveillance age.

The company says the service will make the internet experience while at sea faster and more reliable.
Royal Caribbean seems to be moving full steam ahead with deploying Starlink — it trialed the service on one of its ships over the summer, and will be officially launching it on September 5th, starting with a ship called the Celebrity Beyond. The company expects to have the service fully deployed across its fleet by the first quarter of 2023.
Royal Caribbean’s announcement doesn’t include technical details, like how many Starlink dishes its ships would use, or how much bandwidth would be split between a few thousand passengers. However, the company does promise that people will be able to use streaming services and make video calls.
SpaceX’s boat-focused internet service, Starlink Maritime, is relatively new, having debuted earlier this summer. Currently, it only covers coastal waters in parts of North and South America (including the Caribbean), Europe, and around Australia and New Zealand, but SpaceX says it plans on covering most of the world’s oceans by Q1 2023.
SpaceX has a lot going on with Starlink at the moment. Perhaps the most obvious is its partnership with T-Mobile to beam texts and calls to cell phones, using second-generation satellites that it plans on launching next year. The company is also working with Hawaiian Airlines and charter carrier JSX to provide in-flight Wi-Fi, something that Delta (and likely others) are also looking into. For those of us on land, the company recently launched a version of Starlink for RVs.
Meanwhile, the cruise industry has had a hard time recovering from the pandemic, according to a report from Reuters. Like many other businesses, cruise companies have had staffing issues, with some even having to cancel trips. There’s also the question of whether people will continue to spring for luxuries like cruises, as financial leaders like Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell warn that efforts to fight inflation will “bring some pain to households and businesses.”

In early 2020, the Faroese gourmet restaurant announced its plans to relocate to Fossdalsgjógv but according to news site Dimmalætting, the Yvirfriðingarnevndin, the supreme environmental conservation authority in the Faroes, gave its final verdict turning down the application to have a restaurant built there.
The location is set between the villages Velbastaður and Syðradalur on the west coast of Streymoy, about 20 minutes by car from Tórshavn.
“Today Yvirfriðinarnevndin has ruled that Tórshavn Municipality will not be allowed to alter its development plan for Fossdalsgjógv north of Velbastað,” Dimmalætting wrote. “This means that the controversial issue between Koks and … [a] farmer of Velbastað has been concluded with the implication that Koks will not be located at Fossdalsgjógv.”
“At the same time,” the news site added, “Yvirfriðingarnevndin today also ruled that the request from [the farmer concerned] to have Fossdalsgjógv declared a protected area will not be granted, which will mean that the farmer can continue his business as normal.”
Earlier this year, Koks temporary moved its business out of the country, to Ilimanaq in Greenland, after having resided near Leynavatn for three years, awaiting building permit for the planned Fossdalsgjógv relocation, with the owners expressing their hope to return to Faroe by the summer of 2024.
Koks remains the Faroe Islands’ only Michelin-starred restaurant.

Deployment of Starlink technology will begin “immediately,” Royal Caribbean said.
“Royal Caribbean Group selecting Starlink to provide high-speed, low-latency internet across their fleet will make their passengers’ getaways even more luxurious,” said SpaceX Vice President of Starlink Sales Jonathan Hofeller. “We couldn’t be more excited to work with Royal Caribbean Group to ensure travelers at sea can stay connected with a great internet experience.”
The installation is slated for completion by the end of the first quarter of next year.
The company had just completed a trial run on its Freedom of the Seas cruise ship, one that resulted in strong feedback from customers and crew.
“Our purpose as a company is to deliver the best vacation experiences to our guests responsibly, and this new offering, which is the biggest public deployment of Starlink’s high-speed internet in the travel industry so far, demonstrates our commitment to that purpose,” said Jason Liberty, president and chief executive officer of Royal Caribbean Group. “This technology will provide game-changing internet connectivity onboard our ships, enhancing the cruise experience for guests and crew alike. It will improve and enable more high-bandwidth activities like video streaming as well as activities like video calls. Using Starlink is one more example of our continued focus on innovation and excellence for our guests, our crew, the communities we visit and our shareholders.”
