«В щели между кладкой нельзя просунуть нож». Спустя тысячу лет. Или две. Или три. Какая технология могла так отполировать кирпичи или какая точность потребовалась, чтобы так уложить. Ну и т.д.

Во-первых дохуя где в кладке древних египтян, например, можно засунуть не только нож, но и палец. Я засовывал.

Во-вторых. Всё очень просто. Заходим на кухню. Берем в руки нож. Пробуем засунуть его в щель между полом и шкафом или его отдельными ножками. Обламываемся. Признаем что полы в вашей арендованной хрущобе ровняли инопланетяне, а ножки вашего шкафа полировали супер прецизионным лазером четко к полу.

Гравитация бессердечная ты сука. Хронос беспощаден не менее.

Насчет Баальбека.

Кирпич массой за сотню тонн это очень тяжелая хрень. Краном его не сильно двинешь (римские краны брали до пяти тонн, если требовалось больше то их строили несколько). Все что больше 50 тонн тягали блоками и горизонтальными поворотными колесами и поднимали на подножках. Когда одна многосоттонная каменюка ползет по другой такой же — неровности стесываются сами собой. Даже если там что-то оставалось торчать, то огромная масса сверху постепенно крошит и продавливает выступающие части нижних слоев. Роль раствора выполняет тонким слой пыли, крошки и воды, налитый на поверхность для лучшего скольжения.

То же самое когда говорим о пирамидах. Раствор из гипса в Ахет-Хуфу использовался для лучшего скольжения блоков друг по другу, он там при такой массе не нужен по факту. В пирамиде Джосера для того же использовался особый сорт глины. Если вся конструкция весит миллионы тонн, нет необходимости в скрепляющем растворе — пирамида сдавливает блоки сама по себе. Гравитация.

Полноценный раствор не нужен — кирпичи такой массы если не упали и не поехали почти сразу, уже никуда не уедут до крупной осадки почвы или до серьезного землетрясения. Пирамида Хеопса построена на сплошной известняковой скале, которою стесали под один уровень, осадка почвы ей не грозит.

С течением времени многие зазоры в закрытых местах забьются пылью и раскрошенным камнем. Все это прихватится и станет за пару тысяч лет почти таким же камнем. Это уже Хронос ;). На открытом месте, правда, все что возможно будет выдуто ветром с абразивом и водой.

A few years ago, I photoshopped Best Buy, as the last-man-standing on the brick and mortar battlefront of consumer electronics, as "Amazon Showroom." But of late I find myself walking out with the thing I was looking at, having found it meeting my needs and competitively priced. It turns out the company is thriving, writes Bloomberg's Susan Berfield and Matthew Boyle, despite everyone predicting its death.

Best Buy’s stock fell 10 percent the day he was named CEO—but Joly understands how to value, and capture, customers’ time. Comparable sales rose 5.6 percent last year and 9 percent during the Christmas season, the biggest holiday gain since 2003. The stock price has quadrupled. Even Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos is impressed. “The last five years, since Hubert came to Best Buy, have been remarkable,” he said at an appearance in April.

Those years were about getting people into Best Buy stores and onto its website; Best Buy’s future will be about getting its people into homes. Joly, who made a surprise visit to talk with the trainees, explains the importance of this strategy: “That lets you have a real conversation. You can talk about what’s possible, be human, make it real.” They’ll encounter those slogans again throughout headquarters. “We get 26 percent of our consumers’ electronic spending. That’s embarrassing,” he says. “If we get a third, it would still be embarrassing, but the growth for the company would be tremendous. This is a great way to make a sale, but it’s also the beginning of a beautiful friendship, to quote Casablanca. Does anybody know Casablanca?”

Bloomberg's angle is that the company's service and support, the Geek Squad stuff, will make it big again. But sales made it stay alive the last 5 years.

I returned to Best Buy because its no-bullshit return policy (and the fact that it's the only game in even very big towns) generates a cornucopia of cheap, returned merchandise. Only some of it ends up listed on its website. Check out your local Best Buy and you might find the "Open Box" case has morphed into an entire aisle -- and it's where you can go to get brand new stuff at refurb prices.

Все неустроенные страны похожи друг на друга. А вот все счастливые страны счастливы совершенно по-разному.

Я окончательно понял это только что, проведя три недели в десятке разных городов Греции. Стране, которая встречает тебя бесконечными брошенными стройками и еще более бесконечными табличками «продается» на всём, чем угодно. Так и не преодоленный кризис тут виден везде. И как же реагируют на ситуацию греки? Очень просто: они ее не замечают. Вы можете договориться с человеком о чем-нибудь, согласовать время, обменяться телефонами — 90 процентов вероятности, что в нужное время человека не будет, все двери будут закрыты, а телефоны не будут отвечать. С двух до семи вечера закрыто вообще всё. Без объяснений.

Но вот что интересно. При всем этом наплевательстве на рабочий процесс, между любыми двумя прибрежными деревнями в Греции ходит рейсовый пассажирский корабль на подводных крыльях. А под Москвой, где 20 миллионов людей ежедневно вершат нескончаемый трудовой подвиг, отменяются электрички. Понять это на первый взгляд сложно, но из деталей складывается целое.

Например, город Спарта основан в 1834 году. Тот, который сейчас. А то, что осталось от Спарты времен царя Леонида, заброшено на окраине. И ни один местный не укажет вам туда дорогу. Просто потому, что не знает. Ему наплевать на эти развалины. Они там везде. Или, скажем, Микены. Основанные, согласно греческим мифам, Персеем, который нанял циклопов для того, чтобы построить стену с воротами. И циклопическая стена и ворота стоят до сих пор. Археологи датируют их 13 веком. До нашей эры. Им 3300 лет. А барельеф из двух львов на фронтоне ворот — древнейшее скульптурное изображение в Европе. А теперь, внимание, вопрос: отмечено ли всё это на каких-либо дорожных указателях вокруг? Разумеется нет. Редких туристов туда приводит только собственная любознательность. А греки на всём этом совершенно не заморачиваются.

Потому что они в этой земной жизни всё, что нужно, уже совершили. Они создали современную европейскую цивилизацию. И за это современная европейская цивилизация им вечно должна. И поэтому находиться на вечном содержании у Евросоюза, который и платит за все эти корабли на подводных крыльях и хорошие дороги, для греков вовсе не постыдно. Наоборот — это почетно. Это почетная пенсия.

Да что там, у входа в афинский Акрополь прямо так, без всякого стеснения и написано: «Европа началась здесь». И, кстати, если вам, как и мне было, интересно, что же там такое у Парфенона внутри, за колоннами, то я вам отвечу — внутри Парфенона, за колоннами, стоит большой подъемный кран. И стоит он там уже несколько десятилетий.

Потому что только абсолютно счастливая и довольная собой страна могла взять и поставить подъемный кран прямо в центр своего самого главного символа.

Бывший игрок футбольного клуба "Днепр" и сборной СССР, чемпион Олимпиады в Сеуле 1988 года Владимир Лютый рассказал о намерении отказаться от украинского гражданства из-за "беспредела властей".

Спортсмен рассказал, что уже давно переехал в Германию и начал работать в структуре клуба "Ганза". Пока еще тренер ходит с украинским гражданством, но этот паспорт у него "надолго не задержится".

"Я значительную часть жизни провел в Германии и хотел вернуться на Украину. Был готов работать даже бесплатно - никому ничего не нужно. Это не развитие, это уничтожение. Везде коррупция и договорняки", - заявил Лютый.

Он подчеркнул, что до последнего был патриотом своей страны, пока некоторое время не пожил там. Сейчас же мужчина сочувствует своим соотечественникам. По словам олимпийского чемпиона, на Украине происходит настоящий геноцид народа, о котором все почему-то молчат. Между тем, когда новое правительство только пришло к власти, в стране проживали 40 млн человек, на данный момент их осталось лишь 26 млн.

"Люди бегут оттуда, как с тонущего корабля. Там нереально жить. В Украине люди просто существуют. Почувствовал это на собственной шкуре", - цитирует Лютого портал Football.u.

I am continuing to report rumors on the upcoming Nikon mirrorless camera (obviously some of those may not be accurate):

• Official announcement in the next few weeks (still no exact/confirmed date).
• Battery life is said to be worse than current Nikon DSLR cameras (obviously).
• The biggest problem could be that Nikon may not be able to meet demand as production facilities are not yet ramped up after the restructuring. Again, just a rumor that may or may not turn out to be true.
• Very good video AF features (no other details).
• Video AF will be different for the two mirrorless models (the cheaper version may have less AF goodies).
• AF tracking ability of the 45MP version on par with the current Sony A7 models.
• Another price, this time from the UK (body only): 45MP about £2,400, 24MP about £1,700.
• F-mount adaptor can be used with ANY Nikkor lens (G, E, I reported that a while back).

Members of the Icelandic Pirate Party decided to boycott sovereignty celebrations this week to protest the fact that Pia Kjærsgaard, speaker of the Danish parliament, was invited to speak at the celebrations. One member of the Social Democrats also left during Kjærsgaard’s speech. Members of parliament were called together at Þingvellir Wednesday to celebrate a hundred years of Icelandic sovereignty, where Kjærsgaard was among speakers. Pirate Party members called it indefensible to invite one of the main “spokespersons of xenophobia in Europe” to speak at the occasion. Kjærsgaard is a co-founder of the Danish People’s Party.

The protest caused a stir within the Icelandic parliament, with conservative MPs commenting it was disrespectful. Others said the protest came too late, pointing out that Kjærsgaard’s coming to Iceland was announced months ago. Steingrímur J. Sigfússon, speaker of the Icelandic parliament, commented that Kjærsgaard was invited to speak because of her role as speaker, not because of her opinions, as stated in an interview with RÚV. He says the protest was disrespectful towards the Danish parliament. Kjærsgaard herself responded to the protest, saying that Pirate Party members and Social Democrats were way out of line, calling the protest “ridiculous”. The incident caught the attention of Danish media.

Я родился и прожил 33 года в Челябинске. Это город, в котором проспект Ленина, площадь Революции, улица Кирова; Центральный, Калининский и Тракторозаводский районы. Поэтому мне очень нравятся города с нормальной топонимикой. Уже за одно наличие Тверской улицы к Москве можно испытывать нежность. Я уж молчу про такое счастье, как Гороховая улица в Питере. Гороховая! Это невозможно в Челябинске. Самая более-менее нормальная улица на весь Челябинск — это Солнечная (она находится в жопе).

А в Лондоне что?

Во-первых, мне очень нравится, что целая куча улиц не имеют никаких родовых слов типа «улица» или «переулок»: Piccadilly, Pall Mall, The Mall, Haymarket, Strand, Broadway, Whitehall, Knightsbridge, Aldwych, Holborn, Moorgate, Cheapside, London Wall. Про это явление стоит ещё отдельно как-то поговорить, конечно.

Во-вторых, сами родовые слова удивительно многообразны. Кроме названий в сочетании с понятными всем словами типа street, avenue, road, drive или square может встретиться какой угодно walk, way, yard, court, lane, terrace, gate, place, hill, gardens, mews, crescent (!) и любые их сочетания (Hyde Park Gardens Mews, Berkeley Square Gardens).

В-третьих, как можно не радоваться названиям некоторых станций метро? Скажем, Бакерлоо-лайн (коричневая) ходит по маршруту Elephant & Castle — Harrow & Wealdstone. Так называются станции. «This is a Bakerloo line train for Elephant & Castle», прям объявляют. Другие прекрасные названия станций: Angel, Temple, Monument. Ну и ещё Лондон — это город, где как ни в чём не бывало есть такие станции метро как Wimbledon и Greenwich.

Today, Duolingo's Hindi language course for English speakers officially launched on its website. The course is not yet available on iOS or Android apps, but it will be making its way to these devices in the future. The course has been in development for over a year; Kanan Gupta is the lead creator.

Hindi is the second-most spoken language around the world, according to The Washington Post, with almost 600 million speakers as of 2015. India is one of Duolingo's top 10 markets worldwide, with 10.1 million domestic users, so launching a Hindi course makes sense for the company. There are roughly 8.6 million Hindi speakers learning English through Duolingo. Over 154,000 people have signed up to be notified when a Hindi-language course for English users is available on the service.

This is clearly going to be popular among Duolingo's user base. Many of India's denizens (and the Indian diaspora around the world) don't speak Hindi, though, so Duolingo is already working on English courses for Bengali, Punjabi, Telugu and Tamil speakers. There are currently no courses for English speakers to learn other Indian languages in the works, but you can volunteer to help develop one at Duolingo's Incubator.

Apple's 12-inch MacBook Pro lineup is expected to receive a refresh in 2018, and the new machines may use Intel's upcoming 8th-generation 14nm++ Y-Series Amber Lake chips.

Details on the new chips leaked recently from Dell's Chilean site and Romanian site NextLab501, as highlighted by MacRumors forum reader EugW.


Chips appropriate for the 12-inch MacBook include the 1.1GHz Core m3-8100Y, the 1.3GHz Core i5-8200Y, and the 1.5GHz Core i7-8500Y.

Maximum clock speeds for the new Amber Lake chips suggest significant improvement in processor speeds over the 7th-generation Kaby Lake processors. For comparison's sake, Turbo Boost topped out at 3.0GHz on the 1.2GHz entry-level processor, 3.2GHz on the mid-level 1.3GHz processor, and 3.6GHz on the 1.4GHz high-end chip option in the previous-generation machines.

All of the chips use Intel's UHD 620 integrated graphics and are expected to be released in the third quarter of 2018, with the timing perfect for a fall refresh of the 12-inch MacBook.

Dell's upcoming and as-of-yet-unannounced XPS 13 2-in-1 machine confirms the existence of the Core i5-8200Y and Core i7-8500Y processors, both of which are listed as processor options for the new device.

Intel first announced its upcoming Amber Lake chips at Computex, but thus far has not provided official info on the upcoming processors.

Rumors have not indicated when updates to the 12-inch MacBook will be available, but Apple could introduce refreshed machines alongside new iPhones in September, hold an event in October, or release them on a random date as it did with the recent MacBook Pro.

The recent launch of the MacBook Pro also hints at one new feature we could potentially be seeing in new 12-inch MacBook models aside from processor upgrades -- a third-generation butterfly keyboard.

2015 and later 12-inch MacBook models have suffered from the same issues with keyboard failures, so it would make sense for Apple to include an updated keyboard in those machines as well, if, as speculated, the "quieter" third-generation MacBook Pro butterfly keyboard's new silicone coverings do indeed prevent dust from infiltrating the keys.

"Мы на сегодняшний день не контролируем Азовское море полностью. Зачем стрелять и тратить деньги и силы, если это можно сделать экономически и без применения силы. Они, фактически заблокировали наше судоходство, товарооборот для того же мариупольского порта и металлургического комбината, что очень важно, потому что железная дорога не справляется с таким объемом груза, тем более, это металл, это очень тяжелый груз.

Мариуполь может превратиться в пороховую бочку, потому что, если будет остановка комбината или снижение его производственных мощностей, плюс блокировка порта, это может вызвать социальный взрыв в Мариуполе. И не надо стрелять, выезжать на танках и проводить морскую десантную операцию. К сожалению, нам нечего противопоставить", - заявил Жданов.

Напомним, что Мариуполь - второй по величине город ДНР - был захвачен украинскими войсками летом 2014 года. Во время Русской весны большинство местных жителей на референдуме поддержали создание Донецкой Народной Республики.

The number of workers employed by employment agencies in Iceland has grown fivefold since 2016, as reported by RÚV. Around 1500 workers are now employed by such agencies as compared to around 300 in 2016. At the same time, immigrants or foreign workers make for a growing part of the country’s workforce. 17,5% of the workforce are immigrants this quarter compared to 15,1% at the same time last year, according to Statistics Iceland.

The number of jobs has increased in the last few years, with seventeen thousand new jobs being created in the last three years. While this has in some part been met with reduced unemployment, most new jobs have been taken on by foreign workers, mostly males, according to statistics from the Directorate of Labour.

In the years prior to the financial crisis of 2008, employment agencies hiring foreign workers to Iceland were a subject of debate, as they were accused of abusing their staff. This changed after the crash, as the agencies’ activity slowed down, but the Icelandic workforce is now seeing a resurgence in their hiring. The union movement in Iceland has been critical of the agencies, accusing them of lax supervision and providing sub-par conditions for workers. Most foreign workers coming to Iceland through such agencies come from Eastern-Europe and work in construction, in workshops, in restaurants, and in the tourism industry, as reported by RÚV last year.

If it wasn't already apparent that you can do much more with Nintendo Labo than what comes in the box, it is now. Nintendo has unveiled the winners of a Creators Contest that challenged them to produce games and musical instruments, and the results go well beyond what you might expect. One of the more inventive examples is Momoka Kinder's solar-powered accordion. It uses the Joy-Cons to both play notes (when you cover one of the holes with your finger) and change volume based on tilt, while pressing buttons on the Switch screen controls the octave. You probably won't serenade someone with it, but it's complete and relatively easy to make (you can use tissue boxes if you like).

The other champions are inventive as well. Joseph France's Tea Time game puts Joy-Cons into cardboard teapots that you have to 'fill' and 'pour' to serve virtual customers -- think of this as a physical version of classic serving games like Tapper. You'll also find an analog clock, a remote-controlled dinosaur and a Labo Fix-It game that has you turning cranks and pushing buttons to repair a house that's falling apart.

The competitors had a strong material incentive to win: they each get an ultra-rare Labo-themed Switch. We'd say they're not the only winners, though. This helps Nintendo drum up hype for Labo, as you might imagine, but it could also inspire budding DIY builders to use Labo as a launchpad for their ideas.
